16th Annual Spring Tour of Historic Homes
May 2, 2008 to May 3, 2008
Historic Trinity Church in Apalachicola
Begins Friday at 5pm at Trinity Episcopal Church with Evensong, followed by a free lecture, "History of Apalachicola Architecture" at 6:15pm. The tour begins Saturday at 9:30am with registration. Many of Apalachicola's private homes and buildings can only be viewed from the exterior except for this unique day. For a $18.00 donation ($15.00 if donated by April 25th) you can take a guided tour through architecturally and historically significant homes, churches and commercial buildings. All donations benefit the Trinity Episcopal Restoration Fund. Call (850) 653-9550 for additional information.

Big Bend Hospice Memorial Plant Swap

Bring those extra plants from your yard to share with your neighbors and take away something new to add to your garden this spring. For every two plants you bring you can select a plant at no charge or if you choose, buy a ticket for $1.00 and pick out a plant. Special Hands for Hospice windsocks will add a touch of whimsy to any yard and have been hand made by Karla Ambos. The Hands of Hospice make a great gift for any garden lover and are available for a suggested donation of $10. All proceeds will go directly to providing hospice care in Franklin County. Over 20 nationally acclaimed plein air artists will document the landscapes and the people who inhabit them in a "paint-out" the second week in May. Hailing from Maine to California to South Florida, todays plein air artists will paint on location in Apalachicola, Cape San Blas, East Point, Indian Pass, Mexico Beach, and Port St. Joe, and St. George Island. Possibly some spear throwing before we get started, looking at artifacts. 10: A M, slides and talk on Apalachicola Valley and St. Joe Bay archaeology. 11 AM (approx), tour of 8Gu10, Richardson's Hammock shell midden site (Middle Woodland burial mound and campsite, Fort Walton camp radiocarbon dated to A.D.1200; characteristic large-gastropod shell midden (horse conch [Pleuroploca gigantea] and lightning whelk [Busycon contrarium]). The Historic Apalachicola Christmas Celebration will light up Apalachicola from 4:30-8:00 p.m. the streets of downtown Apalachicola will be lined with luminaries and filled with holiday spirit. Merchants will be open late and the sounds of carolers will echo through the streets filling the evening with Christmas spirit. The highlight, of course, will be the big guy himself. Santa will arrive on a shrimp boat at 4:00 p.m. at the City Dock on Water Street, across from City Hall. Santa will hear children's Christmas wishes and carolers will sing.
